I was Greece the Summer of 2022, and purchased one of these cups. It is in very good condition. I had the owner of the store write down the name, because I new right away that it was a treasure.

The Charles Politis Collection is truly worthy of having its own wing. It represents more of who Mr. Politis was as well as his deep appreciation of Greece's history and culture. Unfortunately, the museum has little documented about Mr. Politis - the man. He was born in Greece in 1915, he was one of 9 siblings, and attended the renown Odeon Music school with his younger sister and child protΓ©gΓ©e Cleopatra Politis. He was a graduate of the Polytechnion in Athens, and served as a Lieutenant in the American Air Force during WWII. He was assigned later under the United Nations Relief Association to manage the distribution of relief supplies to post war torn Greece. In 1954-58, Charles was the first industrialist to contract an American Plastics Production factory in Piraeus, in Moschaton, titled APCO Industries S.A. (1969-1989) by the renowned architect Staikos. APCO produced for the first time, modern plastic yogurt containers through an extrusion process, drinking cups, plastic bags for rice, beans, and spaghetti produce. Refrigerator doors, plastic film for lamination,and industrial milk creates. The facility was fully air conditioned and had a subsidized lunchroom. In 1975, Mr. Politis purchased EBGA S.A, Greece's most famous and oldest Dairy Plant and eventually introduced a full line of EBGA Cream. Charles Politis was Secretary of Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce for 28 years (1951-1977), and co-President of the Chamber for the last ten years before his death: 1977-1988. Charles Politis was a loving Greek, my uncle, but foremost, a lovely human being.

Not mentioned here but the Acropolus and the slope leading to the Acropolus called Areopagus or "Mars Hill" is famous for the apostle Paul's sermon to the Athenians on the story of Christ and his re-surrection.

The National Archaeological Museum is a \&෎must see\&෎ in Athens a highlight of my trip! The Jockey of Artemision, Artemision bronze &ුiconic sculpture of either Zeus or Poseidon&෕ and the Antikythera exhibit are all extraordinary. You can easily spend a full day there.

I restauri sono stati eseguiti magnificamente ma ho notato lo scarso rilievo storico che si da al palazzo, poche informazioni su chi ha voluto la costruzione, il grande archeologo Heinrich Schliemann. Sarebbe opportuno fare una piΓΉ ampia visita guidata, anche con auricolari multilingue, includendo anche le traduzioni dal greco incise sulle pareti e su gli architravi delle porte. I am happy to find your metope and I share with you that those 15 in London and the one in Paris that one day should be in Athens. Nevertheless I regret that I know of of the number of these metopes, but not this one. The metope at the Parthenon is the number I. If you can tell me the number I will happier. I visit Athens every year and use the city metro frequently. It is very clean, well organised and easy to use. Some of the metro stations are like visiting a museum. So much history on display. Highly recommended

Coming out the Monistiraki Metro Station, by one of the various exits, you immediately enter a vibrant example of Athens, which by Day or by Night seems never to stop.What pleases me is the mix of Locals and Tourists. The Greek people obviously use this as a place to meet, and the Tourists can wander the streets, where there is always something new to discover.

Coming out of the Metaxourgio Metro Station &&#3540 On the Red Line 2&&#3541 you will be encountered by a typical busy Athens Roundabout. Her is also the Hotel Stanley, where, even if you are not a guest, you can go up to the Roof Garden. Here is a BarResteraunt, and some great views over Athens. A small Swimming Pool is also here, and on my last visit the cost for nusage was €10 for non-Residents.

It is a question: Why the British never returned stolen monuments from Acropolis?? They belong to Greece.

Visiting Greece was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and the history and magnificence of the Acropolis & the Parthenon were without comparison. Standing at the top of the Acropolis, there is a 360 degree view of Athens, the Mediterranean, and more history than you can imagine. I was amazed and in awe.

There are far too many inaccuracies told about this tower.

For a start, it is not in the ancient Agora of Athens. It is in the Roman Forum nearby. This is a completely separate area today and it requires a separate entry fee.

Next, it does not have sculptures of the six wind deities on its sides, because the building is OCTAGONAL (which means it has 8 sides) and there is a frieze around the top of the tower walls depicting the eight wind deities in marble. They are:
Boreas (N), Man wearing a heavy cloak, blowing through a twisted shell
Kaikias (NE), Man carrying & emptying a shield of small round objects
Euros (E), Old man wrapped tightly in a cloak against the elements
Apeliotes (SE), Young man holding a cloak full of fruit and grain
Notus (S), Man emptying an urn and producing a shower of water
Livas (SW), Boy pushing the stern of a ship, promising a good sailing wind
Zephyrus (W), Youth carrying flowers into the air
Skiron (NW), Bearded man with a bronze pot full of hot ashes and charcoal

Below each representation is a vertical sundial.
On the roof was a triton (male equivalent of a mermaid) acting as a weather vane, and pointing in the direction from which the wind was blowing.

Finally, some say we do not know what this building was used for. Wrong again! It was called the Horologion of Kyrrhestos and inside it was a public water-clock (or clepsydra), driven by a stream flowing down from the Acropolis. This water-clock was built (so ancient writers like Vitruvius and Varro tell us) by Andronicus of Cyrrhus around 50 BC, at a time when water-clocks were quite well-known to Greeks and Romans, and large public ones had been built elsewhere in the ancient world ... but they were uncommon. The city of Alexandria (in Egypt) was said to specialise in building them, and Andronicus is said to have trained there.

The only real mystery here is how the Athenian Horologion survived so well - and the answer may be that it was useful to whoever was in power over the ages, and owes its preservation to that fact. In the early Christian period, the Tower of the Winds was converted into a church. Later on, the Ottomans used it for various purposes (some say the Dervishers used it, but it is hardly big enough to whirl around in!). It gradually became covered with dirt and debris that accumulated over the centuries, until it was excavated by the Greek Archaeological Society around 1837-1845. Modern restorations took place throughout the 1900s.The Triton and water-clock have long gone. The wind dieties and sundials remain. Greece even issued a set of stamps with their images some decades ago, and these can sometimes be purchased at shops in the Plaka nearby. My friends Cas and Liz bought me a set while I was there.

Is it worth a visit? Absolutely! You can see it well enough from outside the fence, but the Tower and the Roman Agora in which it stands are interesting to walk through if you like to walk through history. The door giving entry to the tower is sometimes not open, but it has glass panes in it, so you can have a look inside the tower (though there is not much to see today.)

However, being up close to history is always a worthwhile experience. Go for it.

Hello! My name is Serzhema. These is my first trip to Athens. I came in liner from Creet. I visited Acropol in the morning, then i had breakfast in nice restaurant &&#3534Dionysos zonars&&#3534.I took &&#3534Omlet tomato&&#3534. Near this place i found one of a busstations of exursion busses. You can pay 18 euro and use this bus 2 days, and you would have a map with stations, and some lecturars on your language about the Athens during your trip on this bus. It goes every 30 min. I came to the station &&#3534 The National Arheological museum&&#3534. There was my appartements near. After short relaxing, i bought the fresh orange juse and came to the museum. In monday it work till 7. There is amaizing museum. I walked there 2 hours. When i came outside, i saw the sun was sat, and i decided find a cafe. I came to Plaka. I had chosen &&#3534Idiston bistrot&&#3534, i ate fruit salad and drunk 3 cup of different tea during my waching filn on ipad. I was there 2 hours, it&&#3539s really good place. Then i came home. Next day i visited the National garden, the hill of Filopapou,i saw there very nice charge of St. Dmitrios, then i came to Square of Sintagma. And after some small trip on metro i was in Pireus and find my lainer.

I wet yesterday. It has very well preserved antiquities, small but very nice museum. It might be hot and brown in the summer. But now, in the spring, the open area was just beautful.

There are two ways to get to the temple , the easiest is to take the bus . The most rewarding way is to stroll along the beach in front of the Hotel Aegeon &ු great place to stay&෕ at the end of the beach is a old foot path that leads up to the temple . It takes about 25 minutes to climb , the views on the way up are almost as breathtaking as from the temple itself . With a little imagination you can think that this is how the early inhabitants reached the temple which made my trek up even more special knowing that I am following in their footsteps ! The Athens metro system is efficient, clean, and fairly extensive. When the news extensions are completed, it should make getting around Athens incredibly easy. It is one of the best metro systems I have ever seen, but most of my experiences with metros come from America.

It is okay, I live in Nea Kifissia and not all buildings are of 19th century. A lot are of modern greek architecture.

It is a beautiful place ... metro station is awesome ! And Hotels are cheap and comfortable ...

In 1992 I was fortunate to be stationed on a Naval ship and Piraeus was our liberty port. I hav to admit we spent ten wonderful days there. The scenery was one I would have only imagined in my deepest dreams. To walk along the cobbled streets so many have walked before me, to touch an old church that could only have been no less than a century old, the scent of the Mediteranean intermingling with the aromas of the orange trees lining the sidewalks all combined was a heady experience indeed. How truly remarkable every sight was, the quaint cafes where the locals sipped wine, the alley where artists sold their wares, even the friendly hat vendor at the pier contributed greatly to this visit. But by far, the ruins...to be so close to history so rich and so attainable is only something at the age of 20 I could only wish for. I vowed I will go back, but I do not think I ever would want to leave.

Superb views of Athens and well worth the effort getting to the top. If you have the time its a must.

I visited Greece recently on a cruise and this was apart of my excursion package. The sites of GR, travel to this location were breath-taking. Once we arrived and walked around the site, oh the marvel of the construction and views. I just wish we had more time to explore the areas around the town. Well worth the trip!

In June 2007 my husband, myself and 2 teenage children spent 5 nights in Athens. We loved the culture and the hospitality shown to us. I would return in a heartbeat. From the time we arrived at the airport until we left for Santorini (The best place I have ever been to) we were treated with such warmth and shown amazing hospitality. At night we spent most of our time wandering around the Plaka (oh I so wish I was there) I would recommend Athens and surrounding districts as a number one place to go to. Santorini is heaven on earth!!!

I spent my youth ston Piraia some time I didn't have money to get on the bus to go home but idin't matter.The 42 years unfortunately I've been living in Melbourne Australia a nice clean and green city but my heart is in Piraia.I used to walk from Piraia to Kastella around the coast to visit my uncle and forunately we visit Piraia often.Lots of love to Piraia and Piraiotes

The airport and the subway system in Athens are really first rate. I hate airports on principle, but Athens’ almost made it pleasant. The subway system was easy to access and get around in and was spotless. Another was the condition of public restrooms everywhere we went.

The people were friendly and in was rare not to find someone in the stores, etc. who didn’t have some command of english.

I visit Athens twice a year. With Barcelona they're my favorite cities in Europe. Ok, I admit that I'm 27 and love meeting people! And Greeks, specially young people are a dream come true! Beautiful girls and boys, so open, knowing so many foreign laguages,loving having cafe frappé all year long... Many people forget that Athens is a capital city with a huge beach-coastal avenue (the famous Paraliaki). So seeing the sea in summer or in winter is something that makes me feel alive! Everybody should visit Athens to discover a all-time changing metropole, getting so modern but keeping its own greek characteristics! And the myth about pollution pffff... I'm telling Paris and Marseille are so much more polluted than Athens! (ok, just know that if temperature hits 40°c nobody goes downtown, as simple as that !) So many things were transformed for the dream of the Olympic Games in 2004... Lets meet at Plaka or Psyrri!) Greek Kisses

When my travel partner and I first gawk at the Acropolis shining like a lit-up wedding cake above the city, I feel like a kite tugging at its string. This icon of ancient Athens is real to us now, no longer a postcard or an image in a history or guide book, or movie. Each view presents a photo opportunity.

Also modern Athenians prove friendly as outer-islanders. In spite of the language barrier, we easily strike up conversations. Smiles and gestures fill in the blanks.

If you miss Plaka, you have missed out on the essence of Athens. From the busy metropolitan of Athens, you step back in time to old world elegance and beauty with buildings that will leave you standing speechless with awe. Well Piraeus metro station has this special avra. Only Omonoia metro station gives me the same feeling. It must be the port, the variety of the passengers and the sea...

Athens is my favorite place on earth and the Acropolis just embodies the spirit of ancient Athens. It may be under construction, but with a little imagination and a decent enough tour guide, it can be an amazing experience. The view from up there is amazing and the museum is great. Try sitting on the Areopagus on a sunny day, looking down on the agora. Great pics and just a wonderful atmosphere. Also, for the best pictures of the Acropolis, go up Philopappou hill nearby.

Plaka and Monastiraki are a must in an Athens adventure. I went for a nice dinner in the Plaka – a beautiful area of Athens with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. The food is delicious – souvlaki (think meat on a stick), tzatziki (an amazing white sauce that will leave you wondering what else you could put it on), olives and much more. Most of all is a nice feeling and Plaka has that something...

Been there several times. When I'm at home I dream Plaka, its noise, smell, colours, languages spoken, Greeks shouting out their offers, colourful and nice smelling restaurants,all these in the middle of ancient remains of another world and civilization that we can only dream of. Clash of civilizations! Seasonings, olive oil, sponges, jewellery, books, souvenirs, old fashioned leather products covered with dust, music and above all, friendly spirit of the Greeks.Each time I return home I feel that I missed someting in Plaka and I have to go back.

I appreciate the Scholarship provided by the Theodoros Venetsanos, that can provide the potential candidates a quality education and therefore, the candidates can have a chance to be a tourist for Greece.

I have stayed in Varkiza twice in the last 5 years. One of the best places to be, close to entertainment, all kinds of restaurants, close to the center, next to the water. What else does someone need? Highly recommended!!!

Along with the Louvre in Paris, the Vatican Musuem, and London's British Museum, this is one of the great world museums. Although the focus is narrower than at its rivals--the Greek world, naturally--there is perhaps as great or greater a concentration of "A-list" pieces of great world art in Athens' NAM than in anyh other musuem in the world. From the Cycladic "Harp player" to the gold "mask of Agamemnon" to the bronze Zeus/Poseidon, this collection rewards even the casually intitated with an incredible collection of outstanding pieces and a lifetime of study for scholars of Greek art. Although a visitor will be tempted to rush to the NAM early in a visit to Greece, my advice is to wait until the end and make it a capstone of one's experience. I have taken students to Greece since 2000 and few have left the NAM with anything short of awe and astonishment. Do not miss this Athenian gem and world treasure on your visit to Greece.

I really like Varkiza as it'e reminding me of Greek islands - beautiful coastline, fishing boats, easy going lifestyle, good restaurants and tavernas and so close to Athens! Anything you want within your reach, I love it

The exibit was beautiful, extensive beyond what I would expect, set up beautifully, each turn revealing even more artwork. Set in a great neighborhood, very trendy and upscale. Quite a surprise, great little section of Athens to spend time in.

We visited the acropolis the first of Oct. this year. I was surprised how much you had to climb to get to the top up a marble pathway . Although I am used to hiking and it was no problem I noticed one lady of 70 (a guess) could not continue up to the top with our guide and had to stop halfway. A cane for support might help some older people. We went with Chat tours and our guide was a professor who had taught at the univerisity of Athens for some 20 years and worked as a guide part time. She spoke many languages clearly and fluently and could answer any question we had. We really enjoyed our visit and it was very worth while. You really are in awe of what the ancient people could accomplish. The view looking down from the acropolis was amazing as well.

I first visited Athens in early 2004 and fell in love with the city. It has everything you could ever want, beaches, historical sites, shops etc andthe people are friendly and extremely helpful. 18 Months later and I am now living in Athens and I can honestly say I have no regrets whatsoever!

I think I read most of—if not all of—Mary Renault’s books on Greece, and in 1995, went there, to Athens, and a few islands thereabouts. But I spent most of my time around the Acropolis; I think I fell in love with its image. I’d sit down at a café at night, in the surrounding area, the lights would go on around the Acropolis, at twilight, and I’d gaze at it. It was a warm jewel to my eyes. It was the Parthenon that seemed to grab my attention the most, although the full image of the Acropolis at night is magnificent, and it is on my top ten lists. To my understanding, it was inhabited, the citadel area [the hill it is on], 5000-years ago.

It was considered a walled citadel at one time, then the gods took over, and it became a temple of sorts; or temples, I should say. Pericles ordered a temple erected in honor of his patron goddess, Athena, and thus, a marble temple came about. I do like the Athena coins also, of 449 BC, they are beautiful, and were made to support the war effort in Athens. But as we all know the Christians and Muslims conquered, Greece and used the buildings on the Acropolis for their own liking. And the Turks used it for target practice; and the British stolid a lot of the sculptures, now in the British Museum, which I’ve seen. But as I understand the quest goes on to bring them back, and to restore its beauty.

Incidentally, the food is great also, I just can’t remember what I ate, but whatever it was I never complained, so it must had been good. Would I go back, yup: to see the Acropolis again, and Crete.

National archeological museum is a must...Im intresting in ancient history so i find my place.I still cannot forget the golden treasures of mycinai the golden glass and the mask of agamemnon.There you live and you see the history of ancient greek history.I also believe that the bronze statues of the museum the poseidon statue and the boy of antikithira is the best statues i have seen in my life.The difference bettwen these treasures and the other romans i have seen is that ancient greek statues are so perfect that you believe that are frozen souls.It seems to be funny but if you look carefully you will see life in these statues.They are so perfect that you think are alive.One also great thing of the museun was the paintings of ancient city of akrotiri at santorini,so colourfull.There is a nice cafe and a souvenir shop too.

We were in Athens in March this year what a lovely time to go it was not hot but it was sunny and i loved every minute of being in Athens,we went to parliment square we took photos and videoed the soilders changing the guard it was fasinating i just loved the atmosphere of the place.

We were in Athens beginning of March we found the Metro service was very good and pretty easy to understand the stations are beautiful looked after it was a joy to use the service.

Have just come back from Athens on Thursday we travelled on the Monday,had 2 full days to explore.We saw the Acroplis and the changing of the guards at the tomb of the unknown soilder the next day we went to Piraeus harbour went on the hydrofoil to Aegina it was brillant.We had a great time and very fond memories would like to go back and do it again.

Voulagmeni is a beautiful suburb of Athens and a great escape from the city. It has beautiful beaches, and a nice town with nice tavernas and bars. There is also a lake located near to the highway. A great place to spend time nearby Athens.

I was in Athens during the summer olympics and had the time of my life. It truely is a magnificant city with loads of stuff to do, day and night. The summer clubs near to the area of Glyfada were excellent and really smart inside. Definately going to go back for summer 2005. I just hope that I can stay for more then two weeks this time.

This has to be one of the most beautiful spots in all of Athens. Ever since I was there a few years ago I have wanted to go back. This is a must see spot if you are visiting Athens.

I have lived in Athens for 7 weeks and worked there as a volunteer at the Olympic Games. Later I returned again for 2 weeks, to experience the Paralympics as well. This city is so much alive. Beside the fact that live takes place outside, on the street, the people are great, the climat is wonderful and Athens' history is still so much alive. To have a drink with friends at the foot of the Acropolis is the most wonderful way of ending your day. I adore all the ancient archeological sites that still exists in this city, but of course in the whole of Hellas. I can just simply walk in the center of Athens without any goal, just to embrace this vivid, ancient, beautiful city. And then, to breath all the fresh air in the National Garden and take the Metro back home. These weeks were one of the most wonderful weeks of my live!

I personally found that the athenian metro system is one of the best metro station that I have ever seen. I have travelled all over the world and cant compare another metro to it.

This is a most wonderful collection and one's breath is taken away by the beauty and the age of the exhibits , many 700BC and even 1500 BC. The outstanding exhibits are the horse and young jockey, Poseidon's statue and the golden mask of Agamemnon. I could spend a whole week in there alone. I loved Athens, with its great night life and restaurants. It was wonderful walking over the Acropolis. I was only in Athens three nights but what I packed in in that short time was remarkable. If you have not been to Athens, then make it your next holiday. It is still warm in October!

Its ancient herritage is a must-see and a trip to sounio of the sunset, alos a must-see. Vouliagmeni is one of the most beautiful parts of all Greece if not the most beautiful. It is an oasis surrounded by turquoise water on all sides not to mention its beautiful green landscapes. There is also plenty of restaurants and nightlife nearby so this place comes highly recommended.

Voula, a coastal suburb of Athens, is situated mid-way between Glyfada and Vouliagmenis overlooking the Saronica Gulf. Voula has 2 public beaches offering sun loungers and umbrellas for hire, toilets and shower facilities and beach bars selling snacks, soft drinks and alcohol. Voula has a town square, Plateia Voulas, with supermarkets, bars, tavernas and clothing and jewellery stores among others. Being mainly a residential suburb of Athens, the area attracts a large number of expatriates mainly from UK, Scandinavia and other European countries. Most expats are employed in the Marine and associated industries. The favourite bar of the expat is Pop's Bar in Voula and even those who have returned to their home countries find it hard to resist the lure of Greece and return to Pop's year after year on vacation.
