HISTORY 1068 bc
Regarding the suppression hereditary royalty the sources are few.
According to Aristotle, the last king of Athens was the Kodros (1068 b.c.), whom was succeeded as the aristocratic sovereigns suppressed the royalty institution. According to other historical sources the kingdoms was succeeded by nine annual sovereigns, which were the king who maintained only religious duties, the head of martial forces (warlord), the six legilators (legislators) and the gentleman sovereign, named eponymous, because by his name the year was dated and called on.
These nine sovereigns were elected by the population but by the orders of the "rich and noble", as Aristotle reports, that is to say from the orders of the riche and noblemen.
Next to this aristocratic nine-member government the Supreme Court possessed a distinguished place, the aristocratic parliamentary body Areios Pagos, which was constituted by 200 or 300 noble, aristocrats and persons of spirit.
