The Catalan Company was maintained in the power of the duchy of Athens up to 1387, when it was reversed by the Florentine Nerio Atzagioli. The possession of the duchy of Athens from the oppressive Catalans to the educated Florentines, created a completely new order of things. In order to gain the sympathy of the local population N. Atzagioli allowed the installation of Greek archbishop in Athens. The Metropolite of Athens brought the title of Exarhoy of Greece. Given that the national conscience of the Greeks was based only on the church, the reconstitution of archdiocese had great importance for the Athenians. Nerios also innovated as for the capital of duchy selecting Athens instead of Thebes – to be the capital of his predecessors.
